Balancing
your Hormones
Good health occurs when the hormones
in the body are produced in adequate amounts and are
in balance, working together in harmony.
Progesterone and
estrogen hormones including estradiol and testosterone
are the hormones for women that need to be in balance.
The same goes for testosterone in men. The thyroid hormone
must also be in balance for optimal health.
The end of this
section provides an overview of the various hormones
produced in the body.
The Approach
of Menopause in Women
As a woman ages, progesterone, testosterone and estrogen
levels decline. In this situation, progesterone declines
more rapidly than estrogen, resulting in mood swings,
pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and irregular menstrual
cycles. As a woman enters this change in life, she may
begin to manifest the symptoms of declining estrogen
with vaginal dryness and hot flashes as well as symptoms
of low testosterone such as weight gain, lower sex drive,
low energy and mind fog.
Andropause
in Men
Men can also benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy.
As men enter middle age, their testosterone levels decline.
This is often referred to as "andropause"
which is analogous to menopause in women. Although testosterone
production in men does not stop completely, it does
gradually decline over their lifetime. Symptoms of low
testosterone include:
- Lack of initiative
and assertiveness
- Lower libido
- Reduced mental
sharpness and concentration
- Elevated cholesterol
- Decrease in
muscle mass and strength
- Depressed moods
- Fatigue and
lack of energy.
Natural testosterone
supplementation can help restore youthful energy, bring
back the vigor and vitality in men.
Your doctor at
New York Anti-Aging Centers will determine which form
and modality/delivery of bio-identical hormone therapy
is appropriate for you following a blood and hormone
analysis as well as the patient's history and psychology.
Hormone replacement
modalities may include one or more of the following:
- Oral
- Trans-dermal
/ Topical
- Sub-cutaneous
- Sub-lingual
- Injection or
- Pellet-based
bioidentical hormone therapy.
Those who are NOT
good candidates for bioidentical hormone therapy would
be offered non-hormonal options for managing their symptoms
or referred back to their physician or another specialist
if necessary.
The end results,
for the majority of patients, are satisfying including:
- Weight loss
- Leaner muscle
mass
- Better sleep
patterns
- More energy
and drive
- Stronger sexual
desire
- Fewer mood
fluctuations
- Relief from
regular headaches
- Improved concentration,
focus and memory
- Lower levels
of anxiety and irritability
- Ability to
exercise
- Overall sense
of well being.

The following is
an overview of the various hormones produced in the
human body.
DHEA
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is the most abundant steroid
in the human body. This is the chemical cousin of Estrogen
and Testosterone. It is involved and responsible with
the making of Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone and
Corticosterone. Increases in DHEA help restore these
hormones and substances to their proper balanced levels
as we age and improve overall virility.
Estrogen
This well known hormone stimulates growth of the lining
of the uterus, causes breast tissue to develop and grow,
and activates the progesterone receptors. It also helps:
- Prevent bone
loss that leads to osteoporosis
- Stabilize moods
- Stimulate the
production of globulin by the liver
- Contribute to
the prevention of heart disease, memory loss and skin
changes.
Progesterone
Progesterone is the hormone that counterbalances estrogen.
It performs several valuable functions including:
- Maturing of
the uterine lining to prevent excess build up of tissue
- Prevents the
development of breast disease
- Enhances the
action of thyroid hormones
- Helps increase
metabolism
- Stimulates the
production of new bone tissue, protecting against
osteoporosis.
- Protects against
breast and uterine cancer.
- Thins the blood,
thus preventing blood clots.
- Supports the
function of the adrenal glands
- Elevates your
mood
- Increases sex
drive.
Testosterone
Testosterone is the principal androgen
or male sex hormone. Testosterone is secreted by the
testes but is also synthesized in small quantities in
the ovaries, cortices of the adrenal glands, and placenta,
usually from cholesterol. This hormone stimulates hair
growth, promotes sexual drive, and helps build muscle
tone and controls growth of the prostate gland in men.
Testosterone is also beneficial in small quantities
to women.
